Replacing the footrest rubbers on an RB (CBX footrests). I used (just for trying) these parts from a CB900FC. Please note that these parts are used!

First thing to do is remove the rubber glued to the aluminium footrest. I used a hacksaw, nifes and chisels to do that.  This is what you should end up with:

On the left side image is shown from left to right: A complete footrest, a footrest with the rubber removed, a replaceable rubber, the 2 OEM bolts and the plate securing that replaceable rubber onto the footrest. The long bolt and nut onto the stripped footrest I used as attachment point to clamp it into a vice.

Next step is drilling 2 5mm holes through the footrest. Easiest way to get the exact location is to place that plate onto the footrest and keep it a few mm from the inside of the footrest. Mark the location of the holes in that plate on the footrest and drilling can be done. After that the new rubber can be installed though one of the 2 bolts is too short, I used a screw with the same M5 thread instead. Result can be seen on the following pictures:

I must admitt that I drilled the holes slightly too much towards the inside of the footrest so it didn't fit perfectly (thought the rubber can be slid around quite a bit to get it properly located). But it doesn't fit very well at the outside of the footrest and there are 2 fasteners visible at the underside of the footrest (though I doubt anyone will ever notice). What bothered me the most was the amount of movement of that new rubber as it's hollow inside to allow that plate to be slotted in. On the original footrests the rubbers are solid. That new rubber would decrease the feeling of what the bike is doing through the footrests. No problem for a touring bike (like that CB900 is) but no good for a sportsbike.

I can only conclude from the above that it's not an option for me and I'll purchase new footrests at Honda (or maybe try and find a company that produces replica rubbers that must be glued onto the footrests). If you have comments or remarks please tell me and send me an about it. I'll appriciate that and can choose to use that info for my bikes and/or on this website.
